Filming Nitro’s BOOM movie at Pyramiden, Svalbard – Presented by Eero Ettala

Last spring I got the chance to travel to an island north of Norway called Svalbard and film for the upcoming Nitro film “BOOM”. Svalbard has always been a dream destination for me to see and now being able to go there with my fellow Nitro riders and ride in abandoned Russian mining town called Pyramiden was more than I could have ever imagined. We were totally isolated from the rest of the world with no cellphone service or internet connection.

10 following photos are from the most memorable snowboarding trip I have ever been on.

1. We took a boat from Longyearbyen to Pyramiden in the middle of the night of the arrival day. I was able to take this picture from the boat during the night, since that time of the year in Svalbard sun never sets.

2. Pyramiden has been abandoned since 1998 and some of the buildings in the city look like this. Crazy what harsh weather and conditions can do in less than 20 years.

3. Our tour guide Steve was a true badass! In Pyramiden its a must to carry a riffle with in your crew incase you end up crossing paths with a polar bear. This photo was taken on the first day from our scoping mission trying to find spots to snowboard on.

4. This was the first spot of the trip, that we ended up hitting. Big old metal sign in the heart of the city and Torgeir Bergrem blasting a meanstale over it.

5. Few of the buildings had open doors to visitors and this empty swimming pool was one of the coolest and spookiest things we got to see.

6. Sam Taxwood killed it on the trip and seeing him hit this spot was insane. Bs 50/50 frontisde 360 out like a champ behind the northern most statue of Lenin.

7. We had unlimited access to hit anything we wanted, so we ended up finding this cool wallride spot next to some huge oil tanks. Sam climbing up to a proper handplant.

8. Jumping down a roof is always crazy and jumping down a roof of a abandoned swimming hall spices things up a bit. Torgeir sending a steezy ollie on the last riding day of our trip.

9. On the departure day we had to drive sleds to the edge of the sea ice to be able to hop on the boat, that would take us back to Longyearbyen. Sam & Torgeir posing with the beast.

10. On the boat heading back to Longyearbyen after an successful trip to Pyramiden in Svalbard. I´m sure everyone on this trip will remember it forever. Thanks to Nitro, Red Bull and The Empire for making it all possible.
